Lindsey Graham: ‘Mr. President, Declare a National Emergency Now’
Lindsey Graham has become a politician I like covering, because his statements tend to be strong, interesting, and resolute. The man’s been on fire for a while now, and I wish there were more like him. He’s a man with an opinion and a personality, and I believe the things he says are actually the things he’s thinking.
And so, here’s what I believe he’s thinking today: that Trump should declare a national emergency.
After meeting with the President, Lindsey released this statement:
“I just met with President Trump and his team. It’s clear to both of us that Democrats don’t want to make a deal and will never support border wall/barriers on President Trump’s watch, even though they did so in the past. They hate President Trump more than they want to fix problems, even problems they acknowledged to be real and serious in the past. Democrats will do everything in their power to defeat Trump in 2020.”
Everything Lindsey said about the Democrats and their stance against the border wall/fence on partisan principle rather than what’s good for the country is a lot of what I’ve been contending for weeks. Schumer, Pelosi, and Obama all supported 2006’s Fence Act. But now they’ve labeled their previous stance (and Trump’s current one) as racist and immoral (here, here, and here).
On Thursday, Lindsey essentially called the entire situation hopeless:
“Speaker Pelosi’s refusal to negotiate on funding for a border wall/barrier, even if the government were to be reopened, virtually ends the congressional path to funding for a border wall/barrier.”
Lindsey was succinct Friday:
“Mr. President, declare a national emergency now. Build a wall now.”
Big, resolute words. The standoff situation’s heatin’ up.
